A week ago, my office received an email from a book distributor and a constituent. He expressed concern over the upcoming implementation of GST on books.
The Ministry of Finance has been consistently vague about how to classify books that will be zero-rated and those that will be taxable. Not only does this cause confusion in the book industry, it also burdens the rakyat.
My office has written a letter to the PM demanding an immediate explanation. With less than two months till GST coming into force, this is but one example of the government’s inadequacy in implementing the consumer tax.
As an avid reader myself, I echo the sentiments of the Malaysian Book Industry Council in urging the government to make all books exempted from GST.
