4,000 Missing Parking Bays for LRT Extension Line

MEDIA STATEMENT: 4,000 MISSING PARKING BAYS FOR LRT EXTENSION LINE

The nation is looking forward to the launching of the Kelana Jaya and Ampang Light Rail Transit (LRT) Line Extension with high hopes of having an efficient public transport system. However, as we count down to the launch on the 30th of June 2016, my office is compelled to raise awareness on the severe lack of parking facilities for the LRT Line Extension.

In July 2013, Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana) announced that they will construct several Park-and-Ride facilities with a total of 7,000 parking bays throughout the LRT Line Extension. To date, there are less than 3,000 parking bays built. In addition, the Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) planning documents clearly show that Park-and-Ride facilities were to be built in the Subang Jaya Station and USJ 7 Station. To date, there are no such Park-and-Ride facilities in both stations.

The LRT project is estimated to cost RM7 billion to RM9 billion. For an infrastructure project of such magnitude, it is absolutely astounding that the essential Park-and-Ride facilities have not been fulfilled.

My office is concerned that the lack of parking bays may result in LRT users being forced to park their vehicles in community and housing areas. This will cause friction amongst the LRT users and local residents. Such encroachment will also pose security concerns for gated and guarded communities in Kelana Jaya. Furthermore, traffic congestions are expected to occur near and around the Subang Jaya Station and the USJ 7 Station.

I therefore call upon the Dato’ Seri Najib Razak, as the Finance Minister and the person ultimately responsible for Prasarana and the LRT project, to fulfil the promise to build 4,000 additional parking bays and the Park-and-Ride facilities in the Subang Jaya Station and the USJ 7 Station within six months of this press statement.
