Good morning and good news. My staff and interns went to Shah Alam High Court this morning to attend the appeal of Rafizi Ramli‘s conviction under s504 for hurting UMNO members’ feelings! Rafizi was convicted last year and had to pay a fine of RM1,800.
The High Court judge this morning overturned the conviction and ordered the government to return RM1,800 to Rafizi. This is a small but sweet victory! More importantly it sends a message to the govt not to abuse its power to pursue frivolous charges against politicians under s504 of the Penal Code.
Section 504 of Malaysian Penal Code deals with intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace. Rafizi was charged for insulting UMNO members.
